Why I’m No Longer an Embarrassment to Female Runners Everywhere
I admit it. I’m a rule breaker. A running violator. An embarrassment to runners and coaches everywhere. That’s right. I’ve been running around in the same half a dozen sports bras for the past 10 years. Crappy sports bras that barely get the job done. Sports bras that chafe my breast bone despite dollops of Aquaphor and that stink to the high heavens even after they’ve been washed. Earlier this year while visiting Brooks Running’s headquarters in Seattle, I learned a sports bra should never celebrate a birthday. Oops. I’m officially a sports bra delinquent. Sigh.
The last time I researched the best sports bras and got a professional fitting was, oh, well never. I spend countless hours studying and honing my running knowledge and skills, and even though I know the rules of the road when it comes to our ta-tas, I’ve become apathetic. {Perhaps that’s what happens when you don’t have much in the boob department.} Despite my awesome wardrobe of {often sweaty, stinky} Brooks Running gear, a small collection of old school Nike sports bras have somehow continued to be in the rotation.
But all that is finally changing. It’s time to grow up, graduate and do my sports bra penance. Whenever I ask people about their favorite sports bras, 8 out of 10 female runners mention Moving Comfort. {No, I did not conduct a scientific survey, but trust me, it’s what I hear about constantly.} Did you know that Moving Comfort is owned by Brooks? Have I mentioned Brooks is my favorite running brand? You had me at “Run Happy.” Sold.
I set off to a local specialty running store here in Tampa to get the girls in check and see what the hype on Moving Comfort is all about. I brought my mom with me and we got into all sorts of shenanigans.
Here’s what we thought and our video Moving Comfort review. Apparently my sweet, innocent mom is a harsher critic than me. I can’t wait to try my new bras out on a run!
What we liked:
- All the Moving Comfort sports bras we tried on felt very supportive. We think they would all be excellent to run in and would be comfortable and highly functional.
- There is a bra for every sized chest. From barely there to overly blessed, cup sizes ranged from AA to an E.
- The adjustability of the straps and chest bands rock. You can make your bra snugger or looser by adjusting both the shoulder straps and the settings of the eye hooks on the back. I especially thought the bras like the Fiona that have Velcro shoulder straps were innovative and different.
- The bras came in a variety of colors that were appealing.
What we think could be better:
- Our hair in this video! I’m mean seriously! My mom and I need a brush or something. Ha!
- The bras that require you to put them on over your head can be challenging to get on and off. For my mom who is 61, she couldn’t get her Juno bra on and off easily without my help. Other bras that can be put on like a regular bra with the eye hooks are much easier to get on and off.
- The sizing is challenging. Unlike other Brooks apparel in which I always know I’m a small in bottoms, small in fitted tops and extra small in semi-fitted tops, the bra sizing seems to be a bit all over the place. In some bras I was a small. In others I was a 34B. In others I needed a 32B. You may want to try Moving Comfort bras on in a store first before purchasing online. I did find that selecting your bras based on your real bra size was pretty accurate for me in most cases.
- Two of the local specialty stores I went in to try Moving Comfort bras on did not have the latest styles. The Urban X-Over I mention in the video above has been replaced by the Uplift Crossback and Uprise Crossback but they weren’t available in the store. Below are all the latest styles in the different support categories.
I am a Brooks Running Run Happy Ambassador. I receive free products from the Brooks team to test each month, including three Moving Comfort sports bras they are sending me based on my experience at this fitting. All posts that include any mention about a company, including Brooks Running, are my personal, uncensored opinions and are never biased by my connection to a brand.
Are you a sports bra offender or a sports bra champion? Have you tried Moving Comfort by Brooks? If so, what do you think? What is your favorite sports bra to run in?

So many great tips – I did not know that about not letting a sports bra have a birthday! I haven’t tried Moving Comfort bras, but I’ve been having problems with chafing and should really look into them – I love everything else that Brooks makes!
Moving Comfort Juno is the best I have found fit-wise for me. I love that it adjusts at both the shoulders and around the chest. I used to wear Enell but they are not adjustable and ever though they hold everything in the movement and looseness in areas was no bueno. The Juno is now my go-to 🙂
Apparently, I’m an offender! I run in Champion and I really like the ones I have. They’re more than a few years old, tho. Who knew that there was a birthday rule?
I’m totally an offender, but at $70+ a pop, I can’t afford to replace my sports bras that often. I baby the heck out of the ones I’ve got to make them last as long as possible. I’ve heard good things about the Moving Comfort line, but I have to say (from experience) those velcro straps do NOT hold up well to DD+ high-impact gravity.
Thanks for this feedback Karen. That is good to know. It’s a good thing there are so many options and styles to choose from. I’ll let you know how mine holds up over time for the one I got with the velcro straps. Awesome job taking care of yours. I’m bad about that too. I even put mine in the dryer. I need to stop that. Happy running. xo
I went from zero to three MC bras since getting knocked up/nursing. Maybe it’s because I went from a 34 A/B to a D. Just a thought 🙂 I love the Juno and Fiona, and I love that they aren’t in ugly colors. My husband gasped at spending the money for them since I’m not going to be this size forever (sad for him) but I reminded him of the birthday rule. #winning
Glad to hear these two are working for you. I think the things we use every day like bed sheets, bras, sports bras, etc. are the things where investments make sense. It feels like sticker shock sometimes at first, but I agree with you that having quality pieces for the things we use on a daily basis is so worth it. Hope you and the kiddos are doing well. Hard to believe it is HTC weekend this weekend. Thinking about our fun trip. xo
I am TTERRRRRIBLE with my bras. I have like, 3 that I have had for years. YEARS.
I have only had one Moving Comfort Bra but love hearing more about them. I think I will have to give them another shot. How’s the chafe factor?
I have not run in them yet Sandra. I plan to start running in them next week and will let you know, but all my running friends say they are fabulous and no chafing problems.
I’d be broke if I had to replace all my sports bras yearly but I’m definitely an offender of not replacing them often enough! At least I know to hang dry them?!?
I have the opposite problem and have about 52 million bras, none of which are more then 2 years old. And I have almost no boobs. Oops. BUT, you have given me yet another reason to shop since I have yet to own a Moving Comfort bra! I absolutely love the one you’re wearing in the picture.
*leaving now to go to running specialty store*
I had never heard that sports bras shouldn’t reach a birthday – oops! I’m embarrassed to admit how old some of mine are. BUT, I have started to replace them with, you guessed it, Moving Comfort bras over the last year. There is a reason so many of my friends swore by them! I do agree with your take on how the sizing can be tricky – I have 2 styles that are both 32C and one style is way more snug than the other. My favorite is the Juno bra which I found after having my 2nd baby. The velcro straps make it also double as a nursing bra 🙂
They just discontinued the Moving comfort bra I love, the Vero, I worry it will now be seeing many many birthdays.
I have been running in Moving Comfort for a long time. I started with the Fiona which I liked until I got an endurance racer. Which is now my very favorite!!! I think I am pretty good with getting new sports bras!! It is a totally different story with my regular bras! 🙂
I am definitely an offender! I have some sports bras that I have had for 3-4 years and they are getting stinky even when they are clean. So I just started replacing them with Handful sports bras. They are the softest and most comfortable sports bras I have ever owned. They also have removable pads. I need those as I am completely flat at top, so they give me a little form.
Apparently I am an offender, but I think the number of sports bras and how frequently they are worn makes a difference. I probably have at least fourteen sports bras (I’ve gotten three new ones this summer alone), and I wear five to six a week (peak of my season, it was less during the winter), and I haven’t had a single problem with mine. I run in the very basic Nike Pro sports bras, which are medium support, and I haven’t seen any signs of them losing support, and I’m running, so I don’t care how flat they make my chest. I think what’s most important is comfort and feeling like you have enough support, not a birthday rule or a specific best brand. I run in Nike, my sister likes the Champion ones from Target, my cousin runs in Lululemon, so it’s a personal thing.
I’m a busty gal who has tried SOOOO many different brands of sports bras since I started running last October. Moving Comfort Juno is the best for DD plus girls. Agree 100% to make the trip to a store to try them on first. I will say I was very disappointed that I spent a lot of money on my first one and ran in it once only to realize it was a bit big when it chafed me really bad. At this point I couldn’t return it so I was just out the money. Kind of discouraging. I ended up trying a few other brands and just didn’t love any of them so I caved and ordered another Juno in a smaller size and it was perfect. So glad I did and hope to get a few more soon!!
