Training Lately
Since the end of 2009, I have been training for a race. In case you are mathematically challenged like me, that is 5 years. Five years of nearly non-stop training – gearing up for one race, recovering from another. I have taken lots of breaks – several weeks off here and there – but there has always been something on the horizon. Until now.
For the first time in a long time, I don’t know what’s next. There are no more races on my schedule. Not for this year. Not for next year. Since the Chicago Marathon last month, I have been doing what I want and having fun. I’ve been going to barre class, lifting weights with Mr. rUnladylike, hiking, trying new yoga classes and running with some of the girls I coach at paces that are much slower than I am used to. On Monday, I ran 8 miles at a pretty good clip, and on Wednesday I went for a run and spontaneously ran some fast fartleks during one of my miles.
It is chaos. Beautiful, simple perfect exercise chaos. I could get used to this.
And yet, I feel antsy. A bit unsettled. I’m someone who likes to have the next goal mapped out and something to give my training and running purpose. I want to pick a spring marathon to crush and train through the winter. But other life priorities are calling. The hope to add another unladylike member to our little family is more important than the next big race. (Nice how I just sprung that on you, huh?)
For now, I’m just going to train for fun. Enjoy different workouts. Enjoy running for the pure joy of the cold wind on my face and the gift of being able to do it. Enjoy trying new things. Spend time with friends through fitness. And think about the future and what will be next when I get back out to conquer the run. There are many years and many miles to come.
What is your next big running or fitness goal? What is your favorite way to stay active besides running?

I haven’t raced since May and I am still recuperating from an injury. Right now I am focusing on regaining my base fitness, and my next goal is to run another marathon
I feel like every time I have a race I think “I wish I could just do whatever I wanted and not stick to this training plan!” and then when I don’t have a race it’s the exact opposite!! Sounds like you’re truly enjoying some off time. And it’s always fun to think about a baby project 🙂 I mean, fun for YOU of course!! hahaha
I feel you! I don’t have one thing on the docket for the first time in a long time. I do want to do some small races – for fun – before the year is up as I know there won’t be much of anything come spring.
I’m training for life, as some people say. I like it, I do, but I like how a plan keeps me accountable. Thankfully, I have some friends who keep me running regularly and a class schedule that maintains my strength.
Good decision, Jesica! Go for that unladylike family member!
Enjoy your relaxed training and have many “fun runs”.
I for myself love to go to classes besides running. Pilates, Yoga, Bodystyling. Somestimes it feels so good if I don’t have to look at my watch for my kilometer splits….
This makes my heart happy! Anytime you want a different type of “training run” feel free to come over and babysit Abbey 🙂
I still need to meet her Melissa! Email me and let’s plan a date night so we can hang out and have Abbey with us too! Also, if you want to go for an easy run together, let me know! Would love to chat over some miles and catch up. xo
Yay! Good luck baby making!
i ran the nyc marathon on sunday and don’t have anything on the horizon. i’m feeling a bit antsy as well…
Keep me posted on what’s next for you Kristin! Congrats again on NYC!
This is exactly what I plan to do after CIM! I’ve also been training hard since mid 2010 which is a long time. Enjoy the break!
Thanks Nicole! I’m so excited for you and your marathon! xo
After training so hard for so long it is awesome that you are giving yourself some time to workout how you want and enjoy it.
I totally know how you’re feeling but I’m trying to find new things to try and ways to get outside of my comfort zone…lately that has been finding YouTube workout videos I can stream to the tv in our home gym. So far it’s been something to look forward to in the morning!
I know the feeling all to well and not necessarily by choice. Life has really gotten hectic in our little world here and running has taken not just the back seat but more like the third row. It doesn’t make me feel great but I know right now this is for the best. I actually just wrote out my list of races for next year and the thought of “training” right now is so daunting. Take time for you and your family and so excited to hear you guys might be adding another member in the future. If you ever want some serious “training” you feel more than welcome to come visit our beautiful mess any day!!
Thank you for sharing what you are going through right now Lacy. Our true priorities are our families and lives and you will figure out how to fit running back in when the time is right. Thinking about you! xo
I think it is good to do different things and change it up! I am looking forward to having some unstructured weeks for a couple of weeks. I have a couple of things on the horizon but i haven’t decided what my big race will be yet! I so don’t want to do anything big but i so do want to do something big! Dang it!!
Sometimes it’s nice to just be and see what’s in that space between goals. What kinds of other workouts are you planning to try?
Hi Jenni! Mainly I’m just running and doing Barre3, which I love. I’m planning to try a power Pilates class with a friend and some more yoga 🙂 I’ll probably also start doing some spinning again on the bike. xo
It’s a whole season of training, just with different goals!
You have been such an inspiration to me for a while, and I know that you will continue to be. Trust me, there are still lots of goals to chase down after your family starts growing to include children!
All the best to you, Jes!
Thank you Katie! I love looking at it that way … as a season of training with different goals! I really appreciate your kind words and I’m so excited for your recent marathon accomplishment. Hope to run with you soon. Thanks again! xo
