Snack Attack: 8 Sugar-Free Snacks to Keep You Satisfied
Breaking up is hard to do, but sometimes there are relationships in our lives that make us worse, not better. That’s why I recently broke up with bread and sugar (if you missed my break-up letter to these two maniacal friends, you can read it here).
I’m happy to report that it has been 19 days of no bread or added sugar and I’m still alive. In fact, I feel better than ever.
To quench my cravings throughout the day, I’ve found 8 go-to bread- and sugar-free snacks that are keeping me completely fulfilled with real, healthy ingredients. I wanted to share the snacks that are satisfying my taste buds to help many of you who are also trying to eat clean in 2015. (Please note: I do NOT have a relationship with any of these foods or companies and am sharing these because they are helping me eat my best. No one asked me to post about these products.)
The Good Bean Sea Salt Flavor
I recently discovered these tasty little morsels at Target. They are gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free and vegan. The only ingredients are roasted chickpeas, expeller-pressed safflower or sunflower oil, coarse salt and natural Vitamin E. They are great by the handful, but I especially love putting them on my salads to give an extra crunch. They are a terrific replacement for croutons! They are 120 calories for 1 ounce. A bag at Target retails around $3.99. You can also buy an 18-ounce bag on Amazon or variety packs on their Web site. While the other flavors look intriguing, the sea salt flavor is the only one without sugar and/or other ingredients.
Babybel Cheese Mini Original and a Clementine
For a mid-day snack or a quick bite after a short workout, I love to eat a Babybel Cheese Semisoft Mini Original and a clementine. For the cheese, the ingredients are just pasteurized cultured milk, salt and microbial enzymes, and one little cheese comes in at 70 calories. I love unwrapping them from their red wax covering and eating them in little bites along with my clementine. While I love oranges, I despise unpeeling them. I adore how easy it is to peel clementines. Yum!
LesserEvil Healthy Brands Buddha Bowl Himalayan Pink Mineral Salt Popcorn
I recently discovered this popcorn at my local grocery store (Kroger) and I love it! The only ingredients are organic non-GMO popcorn, coconut oil and Himalayan salt. The slightly sweet flavor of the coconut oil makes this the perfect salty/sweet snack. One serving comes in at 110 calories. You can also get them on Amazon in 12 5-ounce bags.
Peanut Butter Cookie LÄRABAR
When I’m really craving something that tastes like dessert, peanut butter cookie-flavored LÄRABARs have been my savior. With only peanuts, dates and salt, these save the day without added sugar or bad ingredients. Mr. rUnladylike loves these too! They are 200 calories per bar. You can find them at your local grocery store.
Hummus and Veggies
At 3 p.m. when I’m starting to get hungry again after lunch, I love munching on some sliced veggies (like cucumbers and sliced peppers) dipped in hummus. You can make your own hummus, or look for a brand that only contains chickpeas, tahini or olive oil and salt (other additives like garlic or red pepper work too). Beware of fake ingredients and read the labels carefully!
Raw Dry Roasted Almonds with Raisins or Unsulfured, Unsweetened Dried Cherries
I have been finding lots of delicious sugar-free treats at Trader Joes lately, and one of my favorites are their Just a Handful Dry Roasted Unsalted Almonds with either their Organic California Thompson Seedless Raisins or their unsulfured, unsweetend dried sweet dark cherries. I mix one package of the almonds with one serving of the dried fruit, and it’s trail mix heaven. I love that the almonds come in single serve packets to avoid overindulging since almonds are high in calories and (good) fat. Be careful not to overeat on the raisins or cherries because the calories can add up fast and they are not in single serve portions. I could seriously live on dried cherries alone! Yum! (Links below are all to these products on Amazon but you can find them at your local Trader Joe’s store.)
Trader Joe’s Embrace Your Inner Bean Black Bean Snack
Also a new-to-me discovery at Trader Joe’s are these delicious, crunchy black bean crisps. The ingredients are just whole black beans, sunflower oil, rice, salt, calcium carbonate and vitamin C. I ate the entire bag in the car on the way home from Trader Joe’s over the weekend (#SorryNotSorry). Luckily, I had run 10 miles that morning and there are only 3 servings per bag at 130 calories per serving. They also deliver a good punch of fiber to keep you full.
Siggis Skyr Vanilla Icelandic Style Yogurt with Fruit
I have written about my love of Siggis before, but this yogurt is the absolute bomb! It is amazingly thick and creamy and serves up more protein than sugar. It is sweetened with a little agave syrup (agave and stevia are ok in my sugar-free challenge) and I love to top it with a banana or fresh berries. Mmm.
What are your favorite healthy and sugar-free snacks? How is your eating going so far during the first month into 2015? If you are facing challenges, share them here so the community can help give you tips and encouragement!

Roasted chickpeas are so delicious!! The Babybel cheeses are soo good also, I used to carry those around in college with fruit or veggies as healthy snacks. Thank you for the great list!
I love TJ’s Inner Peas, and I always stock up when I’m near one. I’ve also been snacking on grapefruit segments. They seem so refreshing on these cold days in Indiana!
Babybel Light and 2 clementines in my go to, how did you know? 🙂
LOL Abby! I love that we think alike! Happy clean eating and running! xo
Just returned from shopping at Kroger and bought me some “Himalayan Pink.” Without reading about it first, it would have sounded like an exotic cocktail or a drug 🙂
Haha! Let me know what you think about it Mike! My husband and I really enjoyed it! (Sometimes I take it to the movies with us in a bag … shhhhh! don’t tell!). xo
I am SO impressed with your no sugar no bread. Wow, that’s tough. Also, I love all these snacks…we could be snacking buddies for sure!
Have you ever tried Beanitos? Chips made out of beans
Hi Joanna! I love that you love these snacks too 🙂 Ive never tried Benitos but I will go find them! Thanks for the recommendation! Happy clean eating and running! xo
I’ve been doing a 21 day reset (this is week 3) and have felt great – no sugar cravings at all. That is until today! I’ve only got 6 days left and I start wanting sugar NOW? What’s up with that??
Hang in there Angela! You’ve got this! Just keep channeling how amazing it feels when we’re in control and not having all the bad stuff! xo
I don’t eat too much dairy, but some of these snacks look awesome! I’d love to try the chick peas, and non gmo popcorn, well, finding non gmo corn is impossible so that’s a find! I love the Lara Cookie Dough flavor, and I agree with you, it tastes like dessert. I also use the Lara Bars on my long runs with excellent results.
You are a better person then I am:-) I don’t eat sugar that often but bread? Oh heck ya! I do love a lot of the snacks you mentioned though and I will often grab nuts or popcorn as a snack. I’m eating Boom Chicka Pop right now so I may have to check out the Buddha man pink stuff!
Hi Allie! I’m a bread addict, so I thought it would be harder to go this long without any bread, but surprisingly I’ve found I’m really not missing it. I like Boom Chicka Pop too! xo
Kudos to you! All of these snacks sound amazing and I will definitely try some. How do you satisfy your chocolate cravings, or maybe you don’t have any? I could never give up chocolate! My healthy snack is cottage cheese with frozen blueberries and some sesame seeds, always satisfies me! I also love Larabars and the Kind bars from Whole Foods, all natural! But I get the ones with a little dark chocolate!
Hi Angie,
I am more of a fruity person when it comes to candy (Twizzlers, Laffy Taffy, etc.) but I definitely crave chocolate from time to time. One of my favorite sugar-free “chocolate” treats are these little date balls: http://www.livinpaleocuisine.com/blog/2012/09/07/simple-date-balls. They have dates, almonds, cocoa powder, cinnamon and vanilla in them, and you can roll them in unsweetened coconut too. I haven’t made them in a while but they have been a go-to snack for me in the past (which reminds me that I should make some this weekend). I love them with a cup of hot tea after dinner. You do have to be careful when it comes to portion control though because they can pack a lot of calories if you overdose on them 🙂 Let me know if you try them out and what you think. xo
I love snacking on nuts,, fruit, and veggies w/some sort of dip. I’m also a big yogurt topped with fruit fan. I’ve tried siggis and really like ti but it’s a lot more expensive than other brands in my store so doesn’t always fit in the budget. I buy plain greek yogurt and just add some toppings instead of buying the flavored ones (although sometimes I do buy them too). Not going to lie though I’m a big chocolate person – especially this pregnancy. I always try to pair a small piece of chocolate with something healthier though!
Hi Amanda. Thanks for sharing what you’re snacking on. You are right that Siggis can be very expensive. It is such a bummer that healthy foods cost the most. Plain Greek yogurt is a great choice. I’ve always liked Chobani and Fage. Keep up the healthy eating and I’ll be thinking about you and baby-to-be. xo
