Running Pure-fection: Brooks PureCadence 4 Review
Is there such a thing as the perfect run? That’s the question I’ve been pondering the past few days.
Every run, no matter how wonderful, is full of both easy and hard moments and miles.
The weather. The food we ate. How much we had to drink. How soon before our run we ate and drank. The biomechanics of our gait. The workout we did yesterday. The shoes on our feet.
All of these things combine to make a run feel like perfection … or to feel like a near-death experience. Sometimes, it’s as if the stars and moon have to align just right for a run to truly feel perfect.
But, I do believe in perfect runs.
While running this week, I had the magical (and quite unusual) sensation of flying and floating. There was a moment during my run on Monday where I actually thought: Do I have a jetpack on my back??? This never happens. According to my trusty Garmin, what felt like an easy 7 miles was actually more like a tempo run (in other words, my pace was fast for me but felt easy). This is a nice surprise!
I live for those runs. They may be fewer and further between than I’d like, but they make running worth every minute and every step. They embody what it means to run happy.
Running Pure-fection
And speaking of perfect *ahem pure-fect* runs, it’s no secret I love Brooks Running. I run almost exclusively in the Brooks PureCadence. From time to time, I will do cross-training or easy runs in other Brooks shoes in their core line, and I can be seen most days in a pair of Brooks Chariots from their Heritage collection.
But the Brooks PureCadence are my one true running love.
That’s why there’s nothing more terrifying or exciting than when your favorite running company decides to release a new update to your favorite running shoe. I’m happy to report that the Brooks PureCadence 4 may quite possibly be the best iteration of the shoe yet. Many of you have reached out to me asking me what I think of the new evolution of the shoe. Well, they have an incredibly comfortable and smooth ride, and the fit is nearly pure-fect. {Don’t you just love my play on words? Humor me with a chuckle, will you?}
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the PureCadence or the Brooks PureProject line, this is Brooks’ everyday line of lightweight running shoes for runners who like cushioning and stability without the bulk of a more traditional shoe. They are about 2 to 3 ounces lighter than traditional running shoes.
What’s different about the Brooks PureCadence 4 from earlier models?
- Harkening back to the original Brooks PureCadence, the shoe’s tongue is no longer attached to one side of the upper. I personally feel the tongue is also a little longer than previous models (or at least it sits on the top of my foot more closely).
- Also similar to the original model, the new Brooks PureCadence 4 have a softer and fuller cushioning around the back of the heel, which I love. I looked at my 3s and 4s side-by-side this week and definitely see the difference.
- The Brooks logo on the top of the shoe is larger.
- The fit is slightly better in my opinion and the toebox feels a tad more comfortable. I wear a size 9 in all Brooks shoes. The 9 in the first and second models fit perfectly. In the third evolution I probably needed a 9.5. In the 4s, the 9 is perfect again.
- The shoe has softer, more breathable materials than the 3.
- The shoelaces are longer and are really great. In the 2s and 3s, sometimes the laces were short and hard to tie in a double knot. I really like the feel and length of the new laces.
You can read more about what is new/different and why in this interview with the developer of the Brooks PureCadence 4.
The shoe retails at $120.
Any Downsides?
- All shoes in the Brooks PureProject line only get about 250 to 300 miles before they need to be replaced.
- I don’t love the current color offerings of most of the shoes in the PureProject line. While I do like my grey and pink pair I’m currently running in, the other offering is a purple and blue/grey multi-colored pair and I think the entire line has way too many dark grey and black offerings. I hope the fall line will usher in some brighter, fun colors.
Bonus!
Ready for the icing on the cake? My favorite shoe line has an accompanying apparel line.
The PureProject clothing line from Brooks is sort of a hip take on running clothes, with designs that can be taken from the run to the streets for errands, lunch, etc. Lately, I’ve been sporting the PureProject Seamless Capris and the PureProject Seamless Tank II … and I love them. Since I’ve been doing a lot more yoga, strength training and barre classes that require a lot of laying on a mat, I love that these pieces don’t have zippers on the back pocket that can dig into your backside while doing abs or laying on your back.
The capris (there is also a longer version for tights) are incredible. They are literally like wearing a second skin and have compression in them. The top reminds me of a control top that is very flattering for smoothing out your stomach. There is also a fun texture running down the sides of the legs that gives plain black capris a unique edge. Go get both of these. You won’t be sorry.

Great to see your take on the effortlessly run on the same day Zelle posted the other side of the coin. My favorite part of every run/ride is not knowing exactly what I may come across but appreciating every opportunity to enjoy something that brings me joy second only to my wife and sons 🙂 great review & great company 🙂 hope you guys have a great weekend.. All our best @eightcrazysoles
I love what you love about every run! Your words capture it perfectly!!! I did a search for the article you mention. I can’t find it but I’d love to read it. Was it a negative review on the PureCadence? If you have a free second to share I’d appreciate it! Thanks Bill!

I’m sorry not the shoe review but the juxtaposition of easy vs hard kinda days and for me everything in between 🙂 hope you get a chance to take a look 🙂 ttyl 🙂
I love that feeling of effortless running. I remember one run in particular from my last marathon training. I started a planned long run feeling overall fatigue, and decided to cut it short. However, as more miles ticked by, I felt like I actually gained energy, so I kept going! And going until I reached 20 miles, the longest I had ever ran at that point 🙂
Great review! I wish I could try on and run in more kinds of shoes. I usually run in Mizuno Wave Inspires and haven’t really tried anything else from other brands. I did try the Mizuno Wave Riders and they totally didn’t work for me. BUT funny enough, during treadmill running, I didn’t like the Wave Inspires as much – I put on my racing flats (another Mizuno shoe that I can’t remember the name of) and it made treadmill running so much easier!
I love Brooks PureFlows 3! Brooks have the perfect balance between stability and lightweight. I used to run in a more minimal shoe, but those left my feet aching on anything longer than 8 miles. I’ve had a lot of those effortless but fast runs since I switched to PureFlows a month ago!
Happy running!! 🙂
Hi Laura! So glad you are loving your PureFlow 3s. They are a great shoe! I have a pair as well but I need the extra bit of stability the PureCadence offers. You should also check out the PureFlows that are part of the nightlife collection. They basically glow in the dark when car lights hit them and they are made for running in darker hours to help add visibility. You may have seen me post about them before. I have a pair that are black and pink. The laces are like 2 long reflectors 🙂 Happy running! xo
Great post and gosh how true!! Like you, my week has been full of those effortless, glorious runs too! The sunshine has helped! I have been a loyal Brooks Ravenna runner for 6 years! I’d love to try a pure shoe (flow or cadence) but am hesitant to switch bc I struggle with itband pain and don’t want to trigger anything. Happy Running!!!!
Hi Audrey! It is awesome to hear that your week of running has been so great. Congrats! Don’t you just love when that happens? The Ravennas are a good shoe (and the colors out now are really great!). I ran 2 marathons in them in 2011. I prefer the lighter weight and more connected ride of the PureProject line. Next time you are due for a new pair of shoes you should test them out at your local running store. Have them look at you on the treadmill and how you do in them. They are definitely worth trying as going from the Ravennas to the PureCadence was a COMPLETE game changer for me. However, I really believe that when something is working and you are not having injury, etc., stick with it. Going up in stability can create IT pain because shoes like the Adrenaline may push you out too much, but the PureCadence are similar to the Ravennas in that they are between neutral and stability with just enough support. I’ll be testing out the new edition of the Ravennas in February and will let you know what I think. If you end up trying out the PureCadence, let me know what you think. The PureProject clothes are fun too. Happy running! xo
Thank you for the response, Jesica!! When I go to Atlanta, I LOVE going to Big Peach and seeing their shoes/gear and getting the employees advice on items (I live about 2 hours away but my sis lives in ATL). I will have to try out the Pure line again next time I’m there. Since you went from the Ravenna to the Cadence, that might be a good shoe for me to try. I worry the Flow might not be enough…but you never know until you try! Thank you again for your insight!
This is a GREAT review! I love how magical shoes can make runs. That shirt and those tights look amazingly comfortable. I might need to try them out!
Thank you Hannah! I’m glad it was helpful. Keep me posted if you try anything in the PureProject clothing line. I’d love to hear what you think. These two pieces are currently my new favorite things! xo
[…] As you can see from the photo, these shoes have style. There is another, more muted option available on their website (and likely in stores), but I prefer to go big or go home. Running is hugely mental, and since I believe flashy shoes make me look fast, I believe they help me run fast as well. These are the type of shoes that other runners look at and say “I bet that guy is really fast.” But don’t worry, they have a women’s version too, which my friend and fellow blogger rUnladylike recently reviewed. […]
Why can’t I find the cadence 4 for purchase anywhere online except on brooksrunning website?!
Hmmm. That’s interesting. I just did a quick search and it looks like there are some sizes on Amazon, Road Runner Sports, Eastbay, Footlocker, Running Warehouse and Zappos. Check those out and see if they have your size. You can always email the Brooks customer service team as well. The PureCadence have been in high demand this year, and I know my local running store was out for a long time too. I just ordered a new pair on Brooks’ site last month. The team is also working on the PureCadence 5s, which I’m really excited about. Happy running!
Thank you for your reply.
Thanks for the review! I was looking for a post that would tell me the difference between the 4s and the 3s. I’ve been running for a few years now as a college xc athlete, and the PureCadence 4s are the first shoes I’ve ever had that I’ve been really happy with 🙂 Unfortunately running a little late to class the other day I left them on top of the car and they flew away. I’m pretty sad, they had a good month of life left in them and I’m a poor student. That’s the price for a moment of silliness I guess. Off to the store I go!
Hi Kristin! I really love the 4s and hope you will too. I’m so sorry to hear about losing your shoes. I can totally relate to how frustrating that would be! I also really love the new colors of the 4s and the pink ones 🙂 Best of luck with your XC season. Let me know how you like your new shoes. xoxo
