Embracing the Heat: Week-in-review & Link-up

May 18, 2015

Happy Monday from the beach. I’m officially a Florida resident and living on the beach for the next 30 days as we house hunt in Tampa. It feels a bit surreal to believe that this is my temporary view every day.

It makes my extremely hot runs worth it. I had a solid week of workouts last week, but it wasn’t without a few mid-run temper tantrums and slew of curse words every time my feet hit the pavement. On Thursday, the temperature was 90 degrees (Fahrenheit) when I started running … a number I haven’t seen on the thermometer in a very long time.

I was being a big baby about it until someone kindly reminded me “it’s not like you moved from Canada … they do call it Hotlanta for a reason.” Touche! I have changed my perspective to the fact that running through the summer (and year-round) in Florida will make me a stronger runner and athlete. I have realized that 5 a.m. wake-up calls are going to need to become a more common alarm clock setting. And I am ok with it.

Yesterday, Mr. rUnladylike and I were on a boardwalk shopping along the waterfront. I turned to him and said, We are not on vacation. We LIVE here! A few hot runs will not kill me. I’m feeling very blessed and am up for the physical challenge.

Here’s what last week looked like.

Every week I share my weekly training and how I’m taking action against my 2015 goals. I also share the one thing I’m most proud of from the week and the one pitfall that has challenged me the most. Then, I invite you to do the same. There is a place at the bottom of this post for you to share a link to your weekly recap for others to come and cheer you on or offer you support. If you don’t have a Web site, simply share about your week in the comments section.

Getting Sweaty and Stronger

My fitness goals for 2015 are to stay in half marathon shape year-round (20-30 miles of running per week and long runs of 8-11 miles) and get stronger (2-3 strength training and cross training workouts each week).

Next week, I’m really excited to try a yoga class on the beach and to go cycling for the first time in forever on the road.

Where I Struggled

Adjusting to the Florida heat. On Tuesday and Thursday, I chose to run later in the morning or afternoon and that was simply too hot. I learned my lesson and started at 6 a.m. on Sunday, which proved to be much more manageable. I’m going to have to start running before the sun rises, even when my schedule allows for a later start. I know it is getting hotter in many places throughout the country, so we’re all experiencing the pain that comes from transitioning from winter and spring to late spring/summer running.

This Versatile Lite Tank from Brooks Running has been a lifesaver during my hot runs so far. My friends at Brooks sent it to me when I first got to Florida and the ultra light fabric truly is as breezy as it claims. The tank was literally soaked through after my long run on Sunday, but it dried really quickly and still felt light. Because it isn’t a fitted tank, it fits a little looser and I would recommend getting a size smaller than what you normally wear in most tanks. For instance, I’m a size small in most Brooks gear but an XS is better for me in this particular tank (and anything that is only semi-fitted).

Hanging my soaked running clothes out to dry on my beach balcony is a must. Mr. rUnladylike hates when I stink up the place with my sweaty clothes.

Thought for the Week Ahead

YAY for you being in Florida!!! Thanks for the pull yesterday!!

Allie

WOW! That is an absolutely gorgeous view.
I have a lot of sympathy for you running in the heat. I definitely prefer running in sub 0 temps then plus 80. BUT, you will adjust and use the heat to your advantage, I’m sure of it. Plus, you get to wear cute tanks from Brooks 🙂

Nicole

Great Week! The heat sounds brutal – I’m a baby since in San Diego coastal it seems to only go below 50 and above 85 a few times a year . You’ll adapt !

Jealous you got to run with Beth! You both need to visit San Diego !! 🙂

Great week – despite the heat!

I would say that those of us in Ontario, Canada might not mind the humidity – it gets pretty darn hot here in Canada. We just get the really crappy cold weather too. One day I’m sweating, the next I’m freezing (true story – this was last week).

Barely any runs this week: a 5K, 4K and some hill repeats. I had a 10K race last weekend and I think it did a number on my calves, so I have a bit of a shin splint issue. Taking a few days off!

Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home

OMG. That view. I could run in any conditions with that view.

Today it was 84. Tomorrow high of 58. In case you want to move. I just thought you should know.

Beautiful views! Heat is difficult to adjust to for me – almost as difficult as altitude. It’s going to make you such a strong runner, especially when you run in cooler climates. And what a cute tank top from Brooks!

What a lovely place to wake up each day! I am so jealous. Great week of workouts. The heat acclimation will come. It’s so hard at the start of every summer!

Tim

The heat and humidity down in Florida is truly insane. With that being said, I would love living down there and the beautiful weather all year round sounds fantastic!

Carly @ Fine Fit Day

Oof, Florida running is no joke. But you’re absolutely right, it will make you a stronger runner. Good luck house hunting!!
