Sole Mates: Brooks PureCadence 5 Review

March 23, 2016

I’m in a long-term, serious relationship with my running shoes. Yes, I’ve had a love affair with the Brooks Running PureCadence since they were first introduced more than four years ago. Like any serious relationship, we’ve gone through changes together. My running journey has experienced immense growth in the years we’ve been “sole mates.” From half iron triathlons to a Boston Qualifying marathon to simply running for fun, we’ve been through it all. My PureCadence find ways to reinvent themselves each year, which brings me to today: my PureCadence 5 review.

Brooks PureCadence 5 review on runladylike.com

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the PureCadence or the Brooks Pure shoes within its Connect Me line, this is Brooks’ everyday collection of lightweight running shoes for runners who like cushioning and stability without the bulk of a more traditional shoe. The PureCadence 5 are about 2 to 3 ounces lighter than traditional running shoes, weighing in at 7.9 ounces. They have a mid-sole drop of 4 millimeters and are ideal for runners with medium to high arches who enjoy running on the roads.

Having loved the PureCadence 4 {you can see my full review of them here}, I was excited to try the 5s, especially after chatting with the Brooks footwear team earlier this year about the changes that have been made.

Technical Updates You Can Expect

  • The band that has previously gone along the top of the shoe (the upper) under the laces has been removed and there is now a lightweight Guide Rail system that wraps all the way around the foot and connects under the big toe to help your entire body align with the way it wants to run. You can no longer visibly see the band as you have on past models.
  • A rounded heel shifts impact forward to minimize joint stress and help prevent calcaneus (heel bone) rotation. As in other Brooks’ shoes, the PureCadence 5 have their BioMoGo DNA midsole cushioning and a 3D Fit Print, applying strategic stretch and structure for a great fit.

My Brooks PureCadence 5 Review

  • The PureCadence 5 feel like the sleekest edition of these shoes yet. They look and feel more streamlined, as if they have a more minimal profile on your foot. The fit is great, and they appear to be a tad more narrow with a bit more length in the toe box.
  • Unlike all former models of the PureCadence, the tongue stays in place. The PureCadence have long been known for the tongue of the shoe to slide down to the left or right, and this tongue securely stays in place.
  • The upper part of the shoe feels a bit stiff at first, but quickly becomes more flexible after a few runs.
  • The shoelaces are longer and easy to double knot, which I love. I found that I had to lace all the holes to create the right fit for me.
  • While I really like the teal color, I do not like black shoes, which is the predominant color in the other available option. I’m hoping we will see some new colors this summer/fall to round out the line with some more feminine colors for the ladies (what can I say, I’m a sucker for bright pink shoes).
Brooks PureCadence 5 review on runladylike.com

All-in-all, if you like the PureCadence, you will be happy with the PureCadence 5, and, if you’re running in something like the Brooks Ravenna now or another stability shoe but are looking for something different, you should definitely give the PureCadence a chance. I’ve run 4 marathons, 10 half marathons, one half Ironman and numerous other road races and runs in these shoes and have remained injury-free and running happy. The love-affair continues.

I didn’t realize the 5s were out. I’m a Pure Connect fan and I’m not sure how I feel about a new version coming out. I will definitely give them a shot before the 4s disappear… just in case I need to stock up!

rUnladylike

Unfortunately, Brooks has discontinued the PureConnects. They did a major update to the PureFlows to combine the best of the Connects and Flows into one shoe. I know Connect fans are disappointed in this, but hopefully you will like the new PureFlow 5s. I also love the Brooks Launch for neutral runners. It is totally different than the Connects, but an awesome shoe worth trying.

Lisa @ Lisa Runs for Cupcakes

WHAT?! That’s crazy!! Ugh, sad, sad day. I feel like I need to go back to the drawing board.

rUnladylike

So sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Try the new PureFlows and the Launch and see what you think. If you can’t find anything in the Brooks family, then try the Saucony Kinvara. If you liked the Connects you will probably like those.

Lisa @ Lisa Runs for Cupcakes

It’s okay! It’s better to know for when I am due for a new pair of shoes! I will probably try the PureFlows because I have really loved the Connects. The thought of finding a new shoe to use makes me a little overwhelmed though.

Laura @ This Runner's Recipes

Ooooh the teal is such a pretty color! I ended up switching to Saucony Kinvara after the Pure Connect was discontinued and I didn’t like how the new Flows felt. I’m eyeing the Neuro though for a speedwork/racing shoe – I’ve heard some great reviews on it!

rUnladylike

Hey Laura! I’m currently testing the Neuros and will let you know what I think. Hope we can get you back into Brooks 🙂 My husband wears the Kinvaras and loves them.

Ana

Is there a stages of a runner list somewhere? I am at the “order Brooks sneakers” Stage right now. They just arrived yesterday. Last year I had a pair of Nike Frees, and they have been great, but lately after long runs my toes are in pain for at least 24 hours after. I am breaking in the new ones now, but wanted to add another pair to my rotation and ordered the Brooks Pure Flow 4. Will be testing them tomorrow for the first time! I was very excited to see the Brooks box in my door yesterday!

rUnladylike

Yay Ana! Congrats on getting your new shoes. I hope you will like yours as much as I love the PureCadence. Every runner is different, but I think you’ll find Brooks to be far and away better than Nike. You should be able to run any distance in all Brooks shoes outside of their racing line (e.g. you should have no problem running short or long distances in the Flows). The best thing to do is to get professionally tested at your local running store to ensure you are running in the right shoes for your feet/gait, but the Brooks Strides Signature survey on their Web site is a really great guide. Keep me posted as you log some miles in them! Happy running!

lacey@fairytalesandfitness

I have tried Brooks Pure flow( but never the Cadence) awhile back and I found they had a narrow toe box. Since then I have switched to the Launch and love them.

rUnladylike

Hi Lacey! I’m so glad you are liking your Launch. I love the Launch 3s, too! They fit so well. Happy running!

Lora @ Crazy Running Girl

I love the Pure Cadence! I wear them all the time for shorter runs 🙂

JodieR

just wanted to say thanks for the very helpful pure cadence reviews- I’m currently running in the Adrenaline 15’s (have worn adrenalines for years) but finding that I’m getting a sore lower back on the road… after a LOT of research I think i need a more minimal shoe which, over time, is going to help me to a more mid foot/ fore foot action…and the Pure Cadence have come highly recommended. I think your blog has finally convinced me! I have quite wide feet though – would the 4s be better than the 5s for me? I’ve read some negative reviews of the 5s but not of the 4s….
also, i just had a quick question- how would you advise transitioning to a more minimal shoe? clearly just sticking them on my feet and going is probably going to lead to an injury of some sort! many thanks, keep up the good work!

rUnladylike

Hi Jodie! I’m glad the reviews were helpful. My first Brooks shoes were the Adrenaline and I ran two marathons in them. They were a little too supportive for me and would cause IT band issues, which is one of the reasons I made the switch. I personally like both the 4s and the 5s. I would not recommend starting with the 4s because they won’t continue to be made, so you may fall in love with a shoe that won’t be available. Certainly, you could buy several pairs on sale but just know they won’t be available forever. I did that with the 1s :). As for transitioning, just start slow. Run a few 3 mile runs and see how you feel. You may experience some calf soreness. The transition wasn’t difficult for me. I hope you’ll keep me posted on what you think once you try them. Good luck and happy running! xo

JodieR

Great thanks! Ordered… Can’t wait to get started… My calves are one area I don’t currently suffer with, so at least I might move my niggles round a little 🙂

ChrisP

I just had to return my PureCadence 5’s :(. I’m so sad. I’ve worn them (and only them) since they started. The toe box is a lot narrower. My right foot kept going numb on each run. I don’t know what to switch to and don’t want to. Have you heard many complaints?

ChrisP

Ha!!! I just realized I posted on your IG picture too. I was doing an internet search and just came across your page. LOL!

rUnladylike

Let me know what you think about the Launch3s. You’ll need to get fitted as they may be too neutral for you but I really love those, so if you don’t like the PureCadence 5’s, definitely check those out. As I mentioned in my review, I definitely think the toe box feels narrower than previous versions, but it is not too narrow for me thankfully. I’d also encourage you to share that feedback with Brooks via their Web site so they can take this into consideration for the 6s. I’ll be with some of their staff in July and will be sure to mention this as well. Thanks Chris.

ChrisP

I ended up going to the Altra Torin. I love them! They are so comfortable. I don’t particularly care for the look but the comfort is amazing!

rUnladylike

Glad to hear you found something that works, Chris. The Altra’s never have been very pleasing to the eye but they are very comfortable shoes. Happy running!

MistyA

I have wore every version of the PureCadence and think the 5s are terrible. I can’t even get a 1/4 of a mile without the tongue sliding. I loved the burrito tongue. Do you have any suggestions of a similar shoe?

rUnladylike

I’m so sorry to hear that!!! Have you tried the Brooks Launch 3s?

MistyA

I haven’t, but I’m very desperate so I will check it out. Also, do you know of a shoe that doesn’t have the tongue seam? This is my next issue with the 5s. I have very long toes and my foots bends right on that seam. The past versions didn’t have the seam. I have searched every shoe distributor to find my size in any older version and have had no luck.

rUnladylike

Hmmm. Also check into the Brooks Neuros when you try the Launch. You may like those better. They are very different and have a very different tongue. Good luck and let me know what you find that works for you.

Mike

The tongue on the 5’s is terrible. It never stays in place for me. It slides down into the shoe and to the side. And there is no mechanism for the shoe to hold the tongue in place. The 4’s were fantastic for me. The 5’s are a waste of money. Loved everything about the 4’s.

rUnladylike

Hi Mike,
I’ve run in all five editions of the PureCadence, and I have to agree that the 5s are my least favorite. As I wore them more since this review, the tongue definitely slipped. I found the tongue to slip on all versions though. I am hearing really good things about the 6s and am looking forward to seeing them. In the meantime, I really like the Launch3s if you haven’t checked those out. Thanks for sharing your experience.
