Happy Fourth Birthday to runladylike.com
Today, runladylike.com is carb-loading with cake and taking a victory lap around the neighborhood in honor of its fourth birthday. Four years ago this weekend, I turned the lights on at this corner of the Internet with the hopes to engage runners everywhere in supportive, meaningful conversations about training, motivation, inspiration, running advice, unladylike moments and more. I’ve gotten far more from you than I could ever begin to give back, and I thank each and every one of you who has ever read a page on this site during the past 1,460 days (that’s four years to those like me who aren’t the best at math).
I’m continuing the tradition of answering questions about my fourth year to take a jog down memory lane. You can see previous answers from my first birthday, second birthday and third birthday.
What were the four most popular (most viewed) posts I wrote during year four?
Why Qualifying for the Boston Marathon Isn’t That Important
Why I’m Doing Hammer + Chisel and the 21-Day Fix
I Didn’t See This Coming: The M-Word
Everything Happens for a Reason
Apparently you guys love to read about bad or sad things that happen to me, and send kind thoughts and encouragement.
What were my favorite four posts I wrote during year four?
Thank You Running for Everything
Don’t Underestimate Your Flaws
What to Look for in a Running Coach
What was my first post ever? What was my first post from year four?
My first post ever was And Along Came rUnladylike, and my first post from this past year was Solve All Your Running Questions for Less than $20.
What four moments stand out most from the past year?
- Building a new house, finally moving in after living on the beach and then with my parents for seven months and establishing a life in our new city.
- Co-hosting the first Rise.Run.Retreat. in Maine and developing deep bonds with inspiring female runners. I can’t wait for the second year of the retreat this fall.
- Rafting through the Grand Canyon and hiking 6,000 feet out to the top of the South Rim.
- Coaching some amazing women to personal victories and running growth. Year four was a great year for all the runners on Team rUnladylike. From gaining more confidence as a runner to running personal bests in the marathon, the individuals I coach were a joy to work with. I had more runners interested in coaching than I am able to coach, and I sincerely appreciate all the trust they put into me in allowing me to join them on their journeys.
What was my best rave run?
The run that stands out most from rUnladylike’s fourth year was a short, easy run I did in Chicago one morning as the sun was rising.
I also really loved running in Acadia National Park.
What has been the most challenging aspect of the past year?
Like 2014, I continued to find it challenging to pull back from big running goals in order to start a family. Although I ran three half marathons and two 5Ks, I did all easy running and low mileage. I watched the Boston Marathon on the Internet instead of being there in person after qualifying for the first time for the 2015 race. My life was nuts relocating from Georgia to Tampa, building a home, living displaced for almost a year and fitting into a new community. I finally feel settled and truly joyful about where our new journey has taken us. I think perhaps I was meant to pull back to allow all the other major life events, work priorities and other things take the front seat for a while. I’m really excited about what lies ahead for year five.
What am I most looking forward to in the year ahead?
- Training for a goal race again in 2017 (I know, I know. You guys will finally get to see some fun race recaps and training reports again. Hang with me.)
- Coming together in person with amazing runners who inspire me at the second annual Rise.Run.Retreat. and through my Brooks Running relationships.
- Coaching my running clients to reach big goals. I am working with five women for upcoming fall races, and I can’t be more excited about their drive and potential.
- Continuing to spend time with our closest family and friends since we now live in the same city as most of them.
What were my most unladylike moments from year four?
If you’ve been reading runladylike.com for a while, you know I love sharing the unladylike adventures of running and training. During my fourth year, I opened up about several unladylike moments. The worst was probably pooping without toilet paper TWICE behind trees and bushes during runs. It’s always a joy to have to make your running partners wait for you and having to do a little shake and hoping you don’t ruin your running shorts.
My wish for the year ahead is many healthy and meaningful miles for each of you. Thanks for joining me on this journey.
