The Best or a Bust? Brooks Bedlam Shoe Review
I was seated at the boardroom table inside Brooks Running headquarters, patiently waiting for my turn to hold the shoe that was being passed from person to person. I had been asking if a shoe like this would exist for a year. And there it was. Just a few runners away from being in my hand. Hello Brooks Bedlam.
When Brooks introduced its new Levitate in 2017, it was love at first wear. I thought they were the best running shoes Brooks had created in years. Flexible upper. A fit that felt custom to my foot. The right blend of springy and soft.
Naturally, as a bit of an over-pronator, my first question was: Will there ever be a stability version of this shoe? The apparel team gave me a wink and a smile, and I knew this perfect shoe was coming.
Here it finally was.
A month before the Brooks Bedlam launched to the public in September, Brooks sent me a pair in the mail (they retail at $150). I was giddy to try them. I was certain this was going to be my new favorite shoe.
From the moment I put the Brooks Bedlam on my feet, my excitement dulled. They felt inflexible, bulky and uncomfortable. The beautiful design that had me entranced around that boardroom table turned out to be a stiff material. The heel rose over my tab socks. They didn’t even feel springy under my feet.
I’m sure they’ll feel great when I’m running, I told myself.
They did not. I wore them while cross training and for more outdoor and indoor runs. I told my husband that I was trying so hard to like these shoes. He looked at me and said, “You don’t like them, stop wearing them.” (A wise one he is.)
So I did. I laced up my PureCadence 7s and haven’t looked back since.
As a die-hard Brooks fan, those of you who are long-time runladylike.com readers know it pains me to give a thumbs down for a shoe I had such high hopes for. Here’s what you should know about the Brooks Bedlams:
Brooks Bedlam: What Works
- Gorgeous design
- New sock-like ankle fit adds stability and doesn’t require that extra eye-hole for laces
Brooks Bedlam: What Requires Improvement
- The entire upper is stiff and inflexible. A thinner, more breathable material is needed. The upper of the original Levitate was perfection for me.
- The back of the shoe is too high on the heel. It needs to be lower to ensure it isn’t higher than runners’ socks. While I have not experienced any blisters due to this, it creates discomfort.
- While the Brooks Bedlam isn’t a cushion shoe, the sole feels hard, much harder than the original Levitates. When I’m running in them, they don’t feel comfortable.
So there you have it. I’m going to wait for the second model and hope it is much more like the original Levitates. I will certainly give them a try. Until then, you’ll find me in my PureCadence. Happy running, friends.
I received my Brooks Bedlam shoes for free, but all opinions expressed about Brooks are my own, unbiased views. There are Brooks affiliate links contained within this post.
Have you tried the Brooks Bedlam or Levitate 2s? If so, tell us what you think?

The sock collar and silly tongue are the problem. I put my free pair on the shelf and traded them for a pair of trusty Kayano 25
Thank you for this review! My old Ravennas on on their last legs and I’ve been debating trying the Bedlam or the PureCadence (something about the Ravenna just isn’t making it the “right” one for me anymore).
Hi Karen! I struggle with that problem too with the Ravenna. I like them and sometimes I don’t. I think the PureCadence are fabulous. They are a totally different shoe than the Ravenna so they may require some getting used to, but personally, I’d stay in the Ravenna over the Bedlam if you were considering that shoe. Fingers crossed the next model is better. Let me know what you think of the PureCadence if you try them. I’ve been wearing them since 2012 and think the 7s are the best model since the originals. The 6 were great too if you can still find those on sale. Happy running.
Jesica, I’m so glad I’m not the only one that hates the new versions! I wear a neutral shoe, so I wear the Levitate. I was running in the Adidas Energy Boost for a few years until I tried the Levitate last fall training for my first half marathon. I immediately loved them! They were comfortable and springy and I first wore them on an 8 mile run with no problems. Naturally I was excited for the new version to come out and the first day they were available, I bought a pair of the Levitate 2s…and hated them from the minute I put them on my feet! 🙁 The upper material was stiff and uncomfortable and the collar was rough instead of cushioned like the 1s. The size was also a bit off for me too. I always wear a 9.5 but they felt huge and in order to tie them tight enough for my foot to not slip, the upper fabric would bunch and started rubbing a blister on one of my toes. So I did the same, I tried to love them but after 60 days, I sent those suckers back! (Thankfully Brooks at least has an excellent return policy and I also wrote them my honest review). I ordered a half size down just to see if that would help, but I still hated them! So I stalked Brooks’ website daily until I finally found a pair of the original Levitates in a 9.5 and I bought them the second I did. And if I find them again, I will probably by a back up pair. Hopefully they will make some changes before the next version and continue to make the old ones (although I know that doesn’t help you since those are neutral).
Hi TG,
Thanks for sharing your experience, and I’m sorry the Levitate 2s are not living up to their original debut either for you. I thought the same thing about the Bedlams in terms of size. I’m a size 9 in all Brooks shoes and these felt a little too big. I really think the new upper fabric and sock collar are a big part of the problem. The inflexibility creates a whole different experience, which sacrifices fit and comfort for look and aesthetics. Please keep me posted as you try new models. Glad the Levitate 1s will continue to work for you in the meantime. Happy running!
I just so appreciate your honesty about a company I know you love and respect dearly. I’m sure those shoes will be great for someone but your foot & stride is not that someone or maybe they need improvements all around. I’m sure Brooks will take all the feedback for version 2.
I got new shoes Sunday and was shocked when the tread test moved me to a neutral when I’ve always needed a tiny bit of stability too. We’ll see – haven’t run in that pair yet but it was a good reminder that our stride and needs can change and it’s good to get fitted again occasionally.
Thanks for your kind words, Tricia! So crazy about your stride test. More and more stores are learning that it is about more than the ankle and how your body works up the kinetic chain at the hips and knees. I hope your running is going well. Miss seeing you out at the river!!!
I need to try these Levitates! Great and honest review my friend. It’s most appreciated. xoxo
